An image from the archive and something closer to home than my usual Scotland images. This old railway wagon is just up the road from me in Consett, County Durham. It’s a ladle wagon used in the steel-making process that now acts as an impressive monument to the town’s industrial past.
The wagon certainly does a great job of representing the industry that has long disappeared from the area. I was intrigued by the graffiti on the wagon – especially The Four Horsemen on the lower section. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to have some deeper significance but it is a strange name to write.
An obscure reference to the loss of industry maybe? The name four friends have concocted? Or is it referring to a Metallica song from the 1983 Kill ‘Em All album?
I guess we will never really know.
